It’s very easy for business owners to just simply get stuck. They get into business. That alone takes a huge amount of time and often stupendous effort. Then things tick along, work comes in and everything seems great. The business has survived and is making money. Yes, that is one big achievement. There is just one problem though. Business doesn’t take prisoners. You cannot rest on your laurels however hard won they are.
You simply must keep reinventing yourself. It is a bit like Madonna. Doesn’t she keep pushing out the boundaries to change her on stage persona? She does this to keep herself fresh to her audience. This means she has to step outside her comfort zone and become someone else. She does that to build her brand. She moves forward throughout this process and her fans love her. Don’t all truly successful performers do this? Look at Michael Jackson. Just see how much he has changed over the time of his career.
Hasn’t he also moved away from where he started? Yes of course he has. Again what has been the result? Failure? No chance! He must rate as one of the most successful performers of all time. This doesn’t mean you have to listen to or like his music. You don’t need to. Thousands of others do and that is what makes him extraordinarily successful. Now what has this to do with business? The answer is a good deal.
A singer performing may appear a million miles from where the business owner is. Is this really true? A performer is a one person business plying their wares to the buying public. The ones that can adapt to the changing marketplace survive and prosper. The ones that won’t or can’t, don’t achieve much. Over time they fall by the wayside and fade away.
A business of any size faces the exact same problem. It must constantly reinvent itself and move with the times and the marketplace they are in. If they can do this they will continue to be in business. If they cannot, just like the performer they eventually lose their position in the market and eventually stop performing. So this is when a business owner gets stuck.
Remaining put is not an option. Many businesses do become static. They get comfortable when they really should be looking for ways to get uncomfortable. Like Madonna they must look for new ways to get outside their comfort zone. This isn’t an optional extra, it is essential to the business survival. So if you run a business you must make an active and definite push to become uncomfortable.
Doing this you will quickly become unstuck and you will again move forward to bigger business profits as a result.
